Certified capacity report, 2026

DOE Compliance Certification Database snapshot of 2026-11-03. Free data: CSV and JSON (CC BY 4.0).

Of 2,639 portable AC, window AC, dehumidifier and air purifier basic models certified to DOE as of 2026-11-03, 369 (14%) are filed under more than one brand name, and one unit carries 25 brands. Dehumidifiers bunch up just under 50.01 pints/day, the edge of a federal efficiency class, and air purifiers' DOE room sizes follow AHAM's 1.55 formula in all 296 records with both figures.

Key findings

  • 2,639 portable AC, window AC, dehumidifier and air purifier basic models are certified to DOE as of 2026-11-03, filed under 366 brand names and 5,750 individual model numbers.
  • 369 of 2,639 DOE basic models in these four product groups (14%) are filed under two or more brand names: one design, several labels (as of 2026-11-03).
  • The unit filed under the most brands is dehumidifier basic model D026W-50Pt3M, with 25 brands on one DOE record (as of 2026-11-03).
  • 137 of 562 DOE certified portable dehumidifiers (24%) file between 49.5 and 50.00 pints/day, and only 13 file above 50, where the federal efficiency minimum rises from 1.60 to 2.80 L/kWh (as of 2026-11-03).
  • The median DOE certified portable dehumidifier removes 35 pints/day under the 2019 test, at an efficiency of 1.89 L/kWh (as of 2026-11-03).
  • Median DOE certified SACC is 8,000 BTU/h for single hose portable ACs and 10,000 BTU/h for dual hose models. Only 1 of 1,044 single hose models certifies 12,000 BTU/h or more (as of 2026-11-03).
  • In 296 DOE air purifier records, the effective room size is the smoke CADR times 1.51 to 1.57, median 1.55 (as of 2026-11-03).
  • The median DOE certified window or room AC has 10,000 BTU/h of cooling, a CEER of 14.4 and draws 900 W (as of 2026-11-03).
  • 528 of 2,639 DOE basic models (20%) were matched to an Amazon listing by model number, part number or UPC as of 2026-11-03.

How many models are certified, by product group?

Portable ACs are over half the field, with 1,378 basic models. A basic model is DOE's unit of certification: one design, under which a maker lists every individual model number it sells. That's why one record can cover several brands.

How many brands sell the same unit?

Most records carry one brand. The long tail is where it gets odd: 11 dehumidifier records and 35 portable AC records each list 11 or more brand names. The largest, basic model D026W-50Pt3M, is a dehumidifier filed under 25 brands. 218 of the 366 brand names in these groups appear on at least one shared record. Every same unit cluster is listed with its brands.

How are certified figures spread?

The 137 units between 49.5 and 50.00 pints/day sit at the top of DOE's 25.01 to 50.00 class, where the minimum IEF is 1.60. One hundredth of a pint higher, the minimum is 2.80. The 13 units above the line have a median IEF of 2.8, and 10 of them sit within 0.05 of 2.80. More on the 2019 test.

Dehumidifiers here are portable units only. Small dehumidifiers crowd the federal floor: 75 of 253 in the 25 pints/day and under class file within 0.05 L/kWh of the 1.30 minimum. Air purifiers do the opposite. All 296 records with values file at or above the tier 2 minimum that applies to units made since December 31, 2025, with a median of 4.9 CADR per watt.

Method

Data: the DOE Compliance Certification Database (CCMS), pulled for four product groups on 2026-11-03 and kept as a dated snapshot (2 snapshots so far). Each figure is what the maker certified to DOE under the federal test for that product: appendix X1 for dehumidifiers, appendix CC for portable ACs, appendix F for room ACs and appendix FF for air cleaners (10 CFR 430, subpart B). We don't test products.

Counting: the unit is DOE's basic model. Brand names are cleaned with an alias table (so "BLACK & DECKER" and "Black+Decker" count once) and records that list several brands in one field are split. Medians and maxima leave out 15 dehumidifier records whose filed figures sit far outside their class. Dehumidifier distribution tables cover portable units only. The 35 whole home units are tested at 73°F instead of 65°F and are counted apart. 21 records list no headline figure and are left out of every median.

Listings: a DOE record counts as "on Amazon" when an Amazon listing's brand, model, part number or UPC matches it on our published rules, or a review accepted the match. The rules are on the methodology page.

Running cost: certified capacity and efficiency, at 18.16 cents/kWh, the US average residential price for August 2026 (EIA Electric Power Monthly, table 5.6.A). Dehumidifier figures assume nonstop running at DOE's test conditions, an upper figure.

Limits: a model missing from CCMS isn't proof it was never certified, since filings lag. Where a box figure differs from a certified one, it's a different test standard. Corrections: see the corrections page.
